Cole Porter, George & Ira Gershwin, Richard Rodgers, Lorenz Hart, Jerome Kern, Frank Loesser, Irving Berlin, Harold Arlen, Johnny Mercer e  Harry Warren são os compositores sempre  lembrados quando fazemos referência ao melhor do cancioneiro americano.  

Mas há outro "gigante" tão importante e que criou um padrão de excelência em qualidade e quantidade   -   os títulos acima definem muito bem esse padrão.

HOAGY CARMICHEL (Hoagland Howard Carmichael) nasceu em Bloomington, estado de Indiana, em 11 de novembro de 1899, filho de Clyde Carmichael (de descendência escocesa) e Lida Mary Robinson (que lhe deu as primeiras lições de piano, mais adiante ampliadas em Indianapolis), falecendo aos 82 anos em 26 de dezembro de 1981 em Palm Springs, Califórnia, no Centro Médico Eisenhower de Rancho Mirage, sendo enterrado no Rose Hill Cemetery de sua terra  natal.

Estudando piano em Indianapolis integrou banda estudantil.
Nessa ocasião CARMICHAEL fez amizade com Bix Beiderbecke para quem compôs em 1924 “Riverboat Shuffle” (gravado nesse ano pelos “Wolverines) e o hiper-clássico “Stardust” em 1928.    Integrou-se ao meio jazzístico em que transitavam Joe “King” Oliver, Benny Goodman e Louis Armstrong, entre outros, abandonando o estudo da advocacia pela música.

Foi pianista, cantor (quase “dizendo” as letras de forma anasalada) e ator de cinema (talvez sua melhor aparição tenha sido no longa-metragem “Êxito Fugaz”, versão “hollywoodiana” da vida de Bix Beiderbecke protagonizada por Kirk Douglas, Doris Day e Lauren Bacall, tendo Carmichael atuado como “parceiro” de Kirk), mas seu grande trabalho vinculou-se à composição com mais de 200 canções, algumas com letra do próprio e muitas delas com parceiros da mais alta qualidade.

A relação seguinte, parcial, mostra o trabalho de CARMICHAEL em anos seguidos desde 1925 e até praticamente seu falecimento.
