OS VENCEDORES DOS PREMIOS ANUAIS DA ASSOCIAÇÃO DOS JORNALISTAS DE JAZZ - EUA/2007

Vencedores dos Prêmio da JJA – Jazz Journalists Association, em 2007

Dois ícones do jazz de vanguarda, o saxofonista e compositor Ornette Coleman e o pianista e compositor Andrew Hill foram agraciados com as maiores honras pelo painel de 2007 da JJA, cujos prêmios foram anunciados durante um almoço no Jazz Standard, no último dia 28 de junho, ao qual acorreram cerca de 100 agitadores e motivadores da cena do jazz.
Os membros votantes da JJA, uma organização profissional sem fins lucrativos, elegeram Coleman, que já recebera um Prêmio Pulitzer em 2007, como o “Músico do Ano”, além de o “Sax-Alto do Ano”; chamado de Sound Grammar, seu quarteto, que grava no selo de idêntico nome, recebeu o prêmio de “Disco do Ano”, e ainda, como o “Pequeno Conjunto do Ano”. Hill, que morreu de câncer no pulmão em 20 de abril, foi votado para os Prêmios de “Conjunto da Obra”, “Compositor do Ano” e ainda “Pianista do Ano”; ele, que chegou a apresentar-se tocando em trio, poucas semanas antes de sua morte.
Outros vencedores nas 41 categorias, abaixo listadas, foram Anat Cohen, como “Artista em Ascensão” e “Clarinetista do Ano”; Sonny Rollins, como “Sax-Tenor do Ano”; Charles Tolliver, por liderar a “Big Band do Ano”, e Roy Haynes, “Baterista do Ano”. Francis Davis, colunista do “Village Voice”, contribuidor do “Atlantic Monthly” e autor de vários livros de música e cultura, foi votado, pelo reconhecimento a seu trabalho, como “Conjunto da Obra” no jornalismo de Jazz.
Davis, Cohen, Tolliver e Haynes estavam, junto com outros nominados, na platéia, que contava ainda com representantes de entidades patrocinadoras como a BMI, a Boosey & Hawkes, a Blue Note Records, a Concord Records, a ECM (vencedora como “Selo do Ano”), a Mosaic, o Iridium Jazz Club, a estação de rádio WBGO, e também alguns dos premiados no passado, como Gary Giddins, Dan Morgenstern e Howard Mandel, que presidiu o evento. O pianist Frank Kimbrough fez um tributo a Andrew Hill, depois de um brinde elevado por Robbin Ahrold, da BMI. Joanne Robinson Hill, esposa de Andrew, recebeu os premios reconhecendo que seu marido teria adorado aquela festa.

Como destaque, a premiação do brasileiro Cyro Baptista, como “Percussionista do Ano”.
