Ouvindo jazz em Frisco

31 julho 2003

Ainda dentro da série de notas propositalmente postadas para dar água na boca dos interessados por jazz, segue matéria do San Francisco Chronicle, no original:

The San Francisco Jazz Festival has a reputation for reaching across broad swaths of musical terrain. This year's fall event is no exception, with a mix of headliners that includes pianists McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, Herbie Hancock and Keith Jarrett, organist Jimmy Smith, gospel and R&B singer Mavis Staples (in a tribute to gospel great Mahalia Jackson), guitarist Bill Frisell, Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava and Cuban crooner Omara Portuondo.

The festival is Oct. 23 through Nov. 9, with a preview event on Sept. 20 featuring the Herbie Hancock Quartet and vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson -- the first time the quartet and Hutcherson will perform together in the Bay Area.

The full lineup, which the festival is announcing today, includes a series of dates with Bay Area artists, among them the Kronos Quartet (Oct. 24-25), Maria Muldaur and Dan Hicks (Nov. 2) and Kitty Margolis (Nov. 9).

On Nov. 3, longtime critic Phil Elwood will be honored with the annual SFJAZZ Beacon Award, which goes to a Bay Area figure who has made major contributions to jazz.

Tyner (Oct. 23) and Taylor (Oct. 30) are doing solo shows, while Jarrett (Nov. 9) is appearing with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette in a performance that celebrates the trio's 20th year of collaboration.

Portuondo, who became internationally known after her work on the 1997 Grammy-winning album "Buena Vista Social Club," is appearing Oct. 25 with acclaimed Brazilian singer Virginia Rodrigues.

Rava is playing in two of the festival's three "Best of Italy" shows.
